Last night I watched the movie A Mile in His Shoes.  It originally aired on GMC - the home of "uplifitng entertainment", and was released on DVD January 10th.

Based on the true story, which was also made into a novel, (The Legend of Mickey Tussler) the movie is about Mickey, a boy with Asperger Syndrome.  Through some interesting twists of fate, he is discovered by Murphy, a minor league baseball coach.  The relationship is life changing for both of them.

As a mother of boys with Asperger syndrome, I was interested to see if they did an accurate job portraying AS.  I am happy to say that Mickey is definitely not a caricature, by any means.  They got enough right, and what they missed were the things that might only be learned by living with somebody who has a spectrum disorder.

Where they hit a home run (Sorry, I couldn't resist!!  =)  )  was in showing Mickey as more than a condition.  It is so important to help kids on the spectrum who are able to find their gifts and use them.  Sheltering them away is a terrible disservice.  Instead, we should provide assistance with problem solving, and managing anxiety.

There are also unveiled Christian references throughout.  While it is not the main theme, the viewer will hear prayer, see the Bible, and watch a man quietly experience grace and a restoration of faith.

The PG rating is applied because of bullying, a party scene, a cruel instance where Mickey naiveté is used against him, and some guys ganging up against him, and hurting him.  Most of this is implied.

Of course, everything comes together for a feel good ending, and sure, it's a little cheesy, but sometimes that's just what the doctor ordered.
