Chicken Soup for the Soul: Just for Teenagers/Just for PreTeens - Review and #Giveaway @ChickenSoupSoul (ends 8/28)

Chicken Soup for the Soul

I just finished reading the two latest offerings from Chicken Soup For the Soul.  Published in late July, one was written for Teens and the other for Pre-Teens.  Authors Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hanson have compiled 101 stories for each volume, and as usual, they did a wonderful job choosing.   The book for Teens includes winners from a writing contest hosted by m magazine, and a couple of stories from the Chicken Soup Teens Talk High School book.   The forwards of both books are written by Amy Newmark.

I think these books arrived at just the right time for me.  My boys turned eleven this summer. I still think of them as my babies, but there's no denying that they will soon be taller than I am, and they are becoming more independent.

As I read through the pages, I remembered - this is a tough time!!   When you're not really a little kid anymore, but not a teenager, either, what are the rules?  When boys and girls don't look gross to each other anymore, but they still have no idea how to act around each other, what should they do?  when kids are no longer kids, but start branching off into groups, where does one fit in?   Chicken Soup for the Soul - Just for Preteens is a perfect companion for a kid trying to navigate the tween years.  Inside are stories from other kids who felt exactly the same way, and survived!  I think that's the important message.  That this is temporary, and countless others have gone before you!  Have faith and fortitude - and even more important - be yourself and have fun!!! The book is available through Amazon, Amazon.ca, or Barnes & Noble.

Feelings, emotions, and things of that realm are really tough for many kids to talk about.  My kids have an even harder time, due to their Asperger Syndrome.  They have actually enjoyed reading some of the stories together with me, which has helped us work on some social skills and helped them feel more "normal".  (whatever that is!)  I have mostly left the book out for them to read through as they please.

Chicken Soup for the Soul - PreTeens
Chicken Soup for the Soul: Just for Preteens
101 Stories of Inspiration and Support for Tweens

Being a preteen is harder than it looks! School is more challenging, bodies are changing, relationships with parents are different, and new issues arise with friends. But preteens can find encouragement and inspiration in this collection of stories by other preteens, just like them, about the problems and issues they face every day. Chicken Soup for the Soul: Just for Preteenswill help readers as they navigate those tough preteen years from ages 9 to 12 with its stories from others just like them, about the highs and lows of life as a preteen. It's a support group they carry in their backpack!
The book for teenagers also touched my heart.  The stories run the complete range of emotions.  (Just like teenagers do, pretty much on a daily basis!)  The authors share their stories with the hopes that teens will take heart, and not let the pressures that come along weigh too heavily on their souls.  I especially liked the stories about families.  In spite of all the butting heads, attitudes, etc, the love never goes away.
