The Hallmark Channel

The Shunning is the first story of the best selling series of novels "The Heritage of Lancaster County" by Beverly Lewis.  Michael Landon Jr directed the this adaptation for The Hallmark Movie Channel which aired earlier this year.  It was very well received on television, and when it was released on DVD September 13th it was one of the top ten DVDs for the week.

The Shunning - DVD

The story is about Katie Lapp, a young Amish girl engaged to be married to her town's Bishop.  While she is fond of him, and he is a kind man, she has not forgotten her first love - a boy who died a few years earlier.  She also has some other things that are causing her to feel unrest.  Things that don't meld with the Amish lifestyle.

As these things churn inside her, she finds out a huge secret.  She was adopted as a baby.  Her birth mother is ill with cancer, and her dying wish is to meet the child she gave up.  The revelation of her adoption (in addition to the other little things) is just too much for her to process, and she rebels against her upbringing.  The town elders decide that she must be shunned from the community.  No one is permitted to speak or interact with her unless she decides to return to the ways she was raised.

The story is sad at times, and while it probably qualifies as a "chick flick" it is suitable for family viewing.  The language is clean and the story is pure.  There are a couple of kisses exchanged, but nothing racy.  The Amish traditions and lifestyle are (to the best of my knowledge) portrayed fairly.  The movie was given the family approval for all ages, and Beverly Lewis herself is very pleased with the finished product.  Fans look forward to the sequel, which is filming now.
