My boys are really enjoying toys that need to be built and assembled right now.  In addition to being great fun, they are also an easy way to sneak in some therapeutic fine motor skills, critical thinking activity, organization, and the fine art of following directions.
When we received the Calabot Robot to review, it was perfect for them.  It came with all of the pieces that you see here.  Each was cut and punched to specifications, and scored along the lines where they needed to be folded for assembly.

A page from the book of directions can be seen below.  They are pictures and diagrams only, so there are no language barriers.

If you look at the next photo, you will see how each piece has tabs and slotted areas so the pieces can slide and fit together easily.

The pieces above are what we used to form the leg you see below.

The construction was fairly simple, the only problem I had was matching the diagram to the pieces we were supposed to be using.  Although in the instruction booklet, it shows each as A,B,C etc, the cardboard pieces are not marked.  We had to match them up by shape.  Stamping each one with a letter would have been a nice touch, but not necessary.  It was still a fairly easy project to figure out.

This is how it looked finished but not decorated.

We painted his body with silver paint, then used markers, pipe cleaners, stickers and our imaginations to decorate him.

The entire assembly took less than an hour.  Painting the entire toy silver was a little bit time consuming, and if I had thought about it, I probably would have done that before assembling the robot!

Doing the rest of the decorating was fun, and is still a work in progress.  Our robot friend is never far away, and we've continued to add to his look.

I don't know if you noticed, but he also has two "pockets" on his upper legs, and they open and close. He also has a back pack, and some open holes for storing small things.

I'm happy to report that he is pretty sturdy, and the pieces are staying together even though we move it around quite often, and is a good fit for older kids.  Because the parts are made from recycled cardboard, it's also good for the environment.

I have been given the opportunity to offer a giveaway opportunity for anyone who is interested in a chance at winning their own Calabot Robot.
