K'Nex Top Gear and K'Nex Monster Jam Sets - Imagine * Build * Play

I am always singing the praises of building sets, like the ones from K'Nex.  Isn't it fantastic that my kids can put together sets based on things that truly interest them?  They enjoy putting in the work to get the finished product, and as they go along, without knowing it, they practice following instructions, exercise spatial reasoning, and get plenty of fine motor skills exercise.

I don't know who was more excited that K'Nex™ had launched a TopGear™ line, me or the boys.  I will admit it.  BBC's hit television program is one of my guilty pleasures.  I don't watch TV often, but I am always drawn to episodes of Top Gear.  The stars, Jeremy Clarkson, James May, and Richard Hammond have great rapport, and their quirky British humor slays me.  (moms - the show is rated tv14)  The Stig is a legend.

One episode involved  a machine which launched car darts.  It just got progressively more ridiculous and funny as most of the competitions or challenges do.  The brilliant minds at K'Nex have captured a little bit of the fun in this set.

K'Nex Top Gear

This set is a medium difficulty build.  (it is the one pictured to the left in the photo)  It took about an hour and a half, and it requires close attention to details.

Once it is built, get ready for fun.  The launcher will shoot the cars at the target with a simple push of a lever.  (this is where mom can sneak in a discussion of physics - lever systems, trajectory, and other fun topics)

After the cars are launched, send the bulldozer to clean up the damage.  The bulldozer will also clip to the launcher to transport it.

It has been a lot of fun sending the cars (and various other household items) flying through the air with the Car Dart Launcher.

The Monster Jam™ series features popular Monster Trucks.  The set we received Included Grave Digger® and Sun Uva Digger®.  Now the Anderson Family battle it out in our living room daily.

K'Nex Monster Jam Grave Digger vs SonUvA Digger

K'Nex Monster Jam

This set was quite a a bit easier to build.  When they are put together properly, stickers are added to give them an authentic look.

Once the trucks were ready, we ran them over the ramps head on into each other, (which requires reassembly) and we also took the ramp apart and used the two sides separately.

This was a great way to recreate the racing segments we see on television.  We also use the wedged shaped box as an additional ramp for straight ahead races.

The driver figures come with racing helmets and baseball caps, and can stand or sit.
