About a month ago, we received a fun party game called Love It/Hate It! by Patch Products.  This game meant to be played by 3-7 players.  It's definitely more fun if more players join in, and if you are all familiar with each other, it can get downright hysterical.

Here is what the game comes with:
  • A Speech Bubble Metallic Game Box,
  • 6 White, Dry Erase Speech Bubbles
  • A Green Speech Bubble Holding Tray
  • 6 Dry Erase Pens
  • 147 Cards with 294 Scenarios
  • 3 Blank Cards for Creating 6 of Your Own Scenarios
  • 18 Love It! Chips
  • 18 Hate It! Chips
  • A Black Pouch for Holding Chips and Markerd
The Object of the game is to be the first player to have 3 Love It! and 3 Hate It! chips.  The only thing you will need to play that isn't provided are some napkins to wipe the speech bubbles clean after each turn.

Love It Hate It

To play the game, one person gets the box of game cards, and the others all get a speech bubble and a pen.

The player with the cards reads a scenario to the group.  For example, one card reads something along the lines of, If I died, I would love it if my tombstone read _____________ and I would hate it if it said _________.

Another asked what kind of band the player would love to tour with or hate to tour with.

Once the scenario is read aloud, the other players write answers onto their speech bubbles.  The love it answers go on one side, the hate it answers go on the other.  The answers are slipped into the holder and the subject reads the card again.

Love It Hate It

Now the player to his or her left takes all of the answers, stands behind the subject, and reads the answers to him.  The subject then votes on his favorite.  The person who wrote the favored Love It! answer gets a green chip, the author of the best Hate It! answer gets a purple chip.

When a scenario has ended and the chips are handed out, play moves to the left.

You can see, we had a lot of laughs playing this one!  Now, as I mentioned, the object is to get three tokens of each color. Some of the responses were so funny we laughed until we couldn't breathe!  Others really made us sit and mull over our answers.  Our only problem on this day was that some of us were extremely good at picking the loves - -

- - And then there was my sister, the queen of the hate tokens!  With her around, our game was going to last all night!  Nobody would ever get enough hate tokens and she would never get enough love ones.

Love It Hate It

If you find yourself playing with somebody like her, you may want to improvise like we did.  We had 5 players, so after 4 times around, whomever had the most tokens altogether was declared the winner.

In case you didn't see this in the description, the game is for ages 12 and Older. After seeing the adults having such a blast playing, my boys wanted to have a turn, too.  I quickly went through the scenarios and removed some.  there wasn't anything graphic or distasteful, but there were a few that would be out of the frame of reference for them like questions about jobs, or relationships.  They enjoyed the game as much as we did.

Apparantly, we aren't the only ones who think this is a great game.  Time to Play** magazine has nominated Love It!/Hate It! for a People's Play award!  Here is a fellow from the magazine discussing the game.  It's just over a minute long, and you'll be able to see what I've described here with better visuals.

I'd also like to let you know a little bit about Patch Products.
