Matthew Kelly, author of the book, The One Thing, is a faithful Catholic.  He is a popular speaker, motivator, and author.  People seek his counsel.  But as a new father, he had some concerns.

He wrote: "Religion is the primary humanizing force in a person, in a society, in history. In my own experience this is particularly true of the Catholic form of Christianity. Catholicism makes me a-better-version-of-myself. It makes me more human. But ultimately his reflection centers on a single question, "If I could teach my son one thing that would ensure his appreciation of Catholicism, what would it be?"

The book details his mind's wanderings which occurred as he held the baby in his arms and comforted him back to sleep one night.  He lingered in the quiet, dark room and contemplated how he would instill the faith that was his comfort into the boy.

The book is only 65 pages, and many of them have lovely photographs of baby Walter with the people who love him.  I read it in about 30 minutes.  The impact is certainly much larger than the volume.

While he had many thoughts that night, Matthew realized that although there were many Catholic  traditions and qualities that he could teach his child, the one that he really needed to teach Walter was a longing for the Eucharist.  The body and blood of the Lord.

The book is filled with many sweet and tender reflections, and would make a wonderful gift for a new father.
