The story of Three Hearts is about three children from Mongolia.  They all were born with the congenital heart defect Tetrology of Fallot.  This is a very serious condition, but thankfully, here in the United States, most children have the necessary repairs done in early childhood.  The majority go on to live relatively healthy lives - although some follow up surgeries may be required.  I am fairly familiar with this condition and the treatment because of  my years as a pediatric nurse - and also because somebody I love quite dearly was born with TOF.

One thing I found truly remarkable was that two of the children were in their late teens.  Untreated Tetrology of Fallot will most often claim the life of a child by the time he is 12 to 15 years old - and that would be considered a long survival!  These kids have a hole in their heart where most of us have a wall separating the chambers.  There are also problems with the vessels that prevents oxygen from getting into the bloodstream.  It's really quite serious.  These children appear pale, with blue lips and nail beds.  They get winded very easily and definitely stand out from their active, pink faced peers.

Sadly, in Mongolia, and in many other countries, there are no facilities equipped to perform the long open heart surgeries required to repair their hearts and vessels. Parents prepare themselves for the worst, and hope for a miracle.  The three children in the movie are given a chance at that miracle thanks to the Children's Heart Project.  Chosen from a pool of hundreds, they will come to America for surgery.

The Children's Heart Project is an evangelical Christian organization that brings humanitarian relief to those in need, world wide.  The president, Franklin Graham is the son of Billy Graham.  They are probably best known for the Operation Christmas Child Project, (the one where we fill shoeboxes!) but they do much more, and the Children's Heart Project is one of their many ongoing ministries.
A passionate team of people work to save the lives of three Mongolian children with life-threatening heart defects.  Graduating college senior, Cissie Graham Lynch, granddaughter of evangelist Billy Graham, takes on an internship at Samaritan's Purse working with the Children's Heart Project. This project is dedicated to saving the lives of children by providing medical procedures that aren't available in many countries. Cissie is charged with supervising the arrival and surgeries of three Mongolian children suffering from fatal congenital heart defects.
But the task is not easy and filled with unexpected challenges. Cissie balances responsibilities as a newly married wife to a professional football player and her tasks with the internship. Meanwhile the Children's Heart team turns to a Texas family who travels to Mongolia for the adventure of a lifetime to help bring the children to San Antonio for their surgeries. In Texas, two host families make sacrifices to care for these children and their mothers, while a team of doctors and nurses volunteer their time only to stare directly into the face of life and death. How far would you go to save a life?  It's a fight for survival, a fight of faith, and a fight for a new life for these three hearts.
Follow these children, their mothers, and their host families as they prepare for their surgeries.  You will meet a special young boy from Texas,  Billy Graham's granddaughter,  dedicated doctors, and volunteers.  You will also see the missionary work of this organization, as they teach the Mongolian families about their faith, and about Jesus Christ.
