Once upon a time, there was a magic laundry hamper.  It would fill with dirty clothes every time it was left unattended.  No matter how often the clothing was washed, dried, folded, and put away, the maiden of the home would always find the laundry hamper filled upon her return.

Okay, maybe it isn't magic.  It is just life with two boys. Especially now that it is summer and they are outdoors more.  They are sweating and getting extra dirty! They also have martial arts uniforms that need cleaning, swim trunks, towels, bedding, pajamas... okay, not magic at all.

All of this laundry means buying detergent, which means spending money, and it also involves big plastic jugs to carry and store in the washroom.

Unless... you use the Robby Wash System.  When I heard that there was a way to get clean odor free clothes without traditional detergent, I definitely wanted to give it a try.

Here is what I found when I opened the box.

Robby Wash Contents
  • One Fuchsia Robby Ball, filled with pellets
  • Instructions for use
  • Three packets of pellet refills
  • One stain stick for pre-treating
As you can see below, the top of the ball opens and this is where the pellets are loaded in.  They should be topped off when the level is at about 75%.

If needed, use the pre treating stick on stains.

Robby Wash Stain Stick

Here is how to use it.  When you are ready to do the laundry, separate your whites from the darks, then proceed as you would with your usual wash.  The only difference is, instead of adding detergent, place the pellet filled Robby Wash ball in with the laundry.

I will admit, I wondered, how this could possibly work?  The answer is quite interesting.  Rather than using soap to bind and lift stains, the pellets in the ball release macro-molecules which attach to the dirt in the clothes.  I could get scientific and explain, but I find that using words like ions and pH can cause people to glaze over and lose interest.

Instead, I will use this video made by the company.  It's short, it's clever, and best of all, it explains the technology simply:

I'm happy to report that the Robby Wash ball works quite well!  The clothes do come clean, and they smell fine.  The right out of the dryer scent is very light.  Those who prefer a traditional laundry scent may want to use dryer sheets to achieve that smell.

There are a few things to keep in mind:
  1. If you are doing hot water washing, you may use the blue, but the fuchsia ball is for cold water washing only.
  2. A Robby Ball works best in about 10 pounds of laundry.  Do not use it in a very small load, it will damage the ball.  For high capacity machines, use two.
  3. Never put these in the dryer.
  4. Keep well aerated between uses.
  5. The Robby Wash Ball is not a toy.  Keep it away from children.
  6. Keep the pellet level at 75% - 100% filled.
  7. This kit pictured will last for 120 washes.
