I love Christmas, but I will admit, the commercialization of this special holiday has gotten a bit out of control. Toy stores and retailers encourage children to make registry type lists, the stores have Christmas trees and decor for sale beside the Halloween displays, and parents often go into debt in an attempt to satisfy the wants of their children. It is a far cry from a simple manger in Bethlehem.

I try very hard to keep my boys focused on the true meaning of Christmas with Advent activities at home and at church.  We also participate in charitable endeavors such as shoeboxes, and choosing families from the Salvation Army list and the list that Catholic Charities sends to our parish.

Author Jill Hardie has written a book, The Sparkle Box, that can help even very young children to understand the spirit of the season.  I love the subtitle A Gift With the Power to Change Christmas.

As you can see, the story is about a young boy named Sam.  he is excited that Christmas is coming, and he is especially curious about the sparkling silver box he sees.  His mother informs him that it is a very special gift for Christmas morning.

Throughout the season, Sam helps his mother get ready, and also accompanies her to donate food and blankets to a homeless ministry.  Sam also pays closer attention at his father's office party this year, and is impressed wen his father tells his co-workers about a special charitable contribution they all took part in.  The boy is touched when he sees that the adults are all smiling, and some have tears in their eyes.

Sam gets his own chance to feel the warm glow of satisfaction that comes from giving a special gift to a person in need.

All of these events come back into focus on Christmas morning, when the Sparkle Box is finally opened.  The box is the family's gift to Jesus, and inside are small notes with all of the things they have done to give gifts to those in need.

"The King will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me."  Matthew 25:40

The book comes with a Sparkle Box inside, so you may begin the tradition with your own family.  Here is mine, after assembly.  It just needs a nice bow on top.
