Sometimes people tell me that they have tried to read the Bible, but they just can't get through it.  It isn't surprising.  Picking up a Bible and trying to read it from Genesis through to Revelation without a guide is not an easy task, and so many important nuances could be missed.

I always suggest that they try again with a Bible suitable for where they are in their spiritual journey.  A young person might need a teen Bible, and a new Christian might benefit from a study guide with directed readings and explanations.  The Fathers of the Church Bible is (in my opinion) perfectly suited for Catholics that are somewhat familiar with Scripture and Church customs and would like the insight of some of our great teachers.

This Bible is filled with helpful notations and also includes special color insert pages.  These are what set this Bible apart from others.  They contain interesting thoughts or questions on a variety of topics such as the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist, The Our Father, Mary, the Creation Story, and much more.

After an idea is introduced it is followed by excerpts from the writings of the Early Church Fathers.  For example, #69 deals with Judas.  In a conversational manner, we are asked to consider if Judas were truly a sinner if his betrayal was necessary in order for Scripture to be fulfilled.  What follows are several paragraphs of Saint Augustine's thoughts on the subject.

Some things to note:  The study page inserts are not in any specific order.  They are included at intervals which are designed to keep the book in a proper balance and proportion.  To find your topic of interest one should consult the guide in the table of contents.

Also - because of there are so many pages they are thin.  Not terribly thin - they won't tear easily - if you are a note taker you will be fine with a pen, but a highlighter bleeds through to the other side.  The Bible is a good size (about 6 x 9 inches) for an end table or nightstand but rather thick and a bit heavy for carrying around.

I have not read every word on the more than 2,000 pages, but I do know that this revised edition of the New American Bible has been approved and authorized for Catholic use.  It is a wonderful addition to a Catholic home and would make a great gift for someone who recently completed RICA or a newly confirmed young person.
