Players purchase a quest before they arrive for the quest. Upon arrival at the starting point they will access the website and begin working their way through the city of their choosing. Correctly answering questions at different spots throughout the area will earn points and lead the team to subsequent checkpoints.
On Sunday my family did the Midtown Manhattan Quest.
On the Quest home page we saw that the starting location was in Times Square and that it would end at Grand Central Station. The quest is expected to take three to three and a half hour and we would walk 2.1 miles as we took the time to answer 22 questions and 1 bonus question. The quest did not involve any additional cost.
So, we walked to the starting point, logged in, and began.
The questions were interesting and I enjoyed learning and noticing new things that we had walked past so many times before without appreciating.
After entering a correct answer we would get a short blurb about the landmark so this could be a a fun field trip for other homeschool families.
A correct answer also earns an affirmative response and a prompt to continue.
If a question is answered correctly on the first try (without a hint) the team earns thirty points. An incorrect entry will subtract five points so be careful of your typing . We had an auto correct fail so that is something to consider as well. Players may only attempt to answer a question a maximum of four times so if necessary, use one of the hints. (The hints are not freebies, five points will be deducted to use one.) If you cannot answer correctly after four attempts you have not answered correctly, the answer will be provided to you.
Some quests include bonus questions. Fifteen points are awarded for correct bonus answers but no points are deducted if you get the question wrong. A team will only get only get one try at these.
Score and time are used to determine a team's position on the leader board. The point total is considered first and and then if there is a tie score the team who took the least amount of time to complete the Quest from start to finish would earn a higher position. As soon as a quest is completed the score and time are provided.
I wasn't sure how we would do. We had to skip one question due to a construction project's temporary obstruction of an answer. We also had one incorrect first try, a spelling error, a math error, and the previously mentioned auto correct mishap - however, we did get the bonus question correct, and wound up with 625 our of a possible 675 points.
There we are at the top of the leaderboard and showing that the three hour estimate was pretty spot on.
I will also give the Urban Adventure Quest a great rating for customer service. I informed them of the renovation obstruction and had an answer in about an hour. If you should encounter an issue on a Quest, please report it. The company will put a notice into the game and provide an alternate way to solve the puzzle.
There are some puzzles to solve so bring a pencil, paper, and there is some math so if you don't like figures a calculator might help, too. Wear comfortable clothes and dress for the weather as most of the time is spent outdoors. There are also plenty of restaurants, restrooms, and attractions along the way. Be sure to have a fully charged smartphone. WiFi is not always available, and you will need to keep connected to the website. There is a FAQ page on the website that covers most of what you will need to know.
You may enjoy an Urban Adventure in Atlanta, Austin, Big Bear Lake, Boston, Catalina Island, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Fort Worth, Hollywood, Honolulu, Las Vegas, L.A., New Orleans, New York, (Midtown or Central Park) Sacramento, San Antonio, San Diego, San Francisco, Vancouver BC Canada, or Washington DC.
We had a wonderful day and have already decided to purchase the Central Park quest soon!
I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Tomoson.com. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.
