Advent is a special time of waiting and preparation for Christians, especially Catholics. As the world bombards us with materialism we try to keep our focus on the miracle of Christmas. For many, this brings to mind the traditional thoughts of a manger nativity scene, the shining star, and our favorite carols such as "O Holy Night", "Silent Night", or "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear". This is good to a point but there is a problem with familiarity. By domesticating Christmas and making it a sweet and nostalgic occasion it is possible to overlook the profundity of it all.
Try if you can, to imagine the Christmas story through the eyes of Mary's parents, Joseph, and of course, Mary! What if you were a first century Jew? What would you make of the stories you were hearing?
In The Advent of Christ, Edward Sri assists the reader to understand these stories from a new perspective. He helps us to understand what the people of the time may have felt or thought, and how the familiar words had somewhat different meanings in Bethlehem and Nazareth at the time that Christ was born.
Filled with spiritual gems, this book of reflections will take the reader through four weeks of Advent, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, the week following Christmas including reflections on the Feast of the Holy Family, and the Feast of St. John the Apostle and Evangelist. After Christmas there are meditations for The Feast of the Mother of God, and The Feast of the Epiphany.
Each entry begins with a short Scriptural reading and is followed with some discussion and meditation from a historical viewpoint. The author then poses a question for personal reflection and then closes with a prayer.
This is a wonderful choice for personal Advent reflection, and would also make a fine gift.
Dr. Edward Sri is professor of theology and Scripture at the Augustine Institute’s Master’s in Catechetics and Evangelization program in Denver, Colorado. He is a best selling author, has made many appearances on EWTN, has been featured in DVD lecture series and he is an articulate speaker and defender of the Catholic faith.
Prepare ye the way of the Lord!
