Scrabble is an old favorite - it doesn't ever go out of style, and it has had many variations. I think one of the reasons we love the game is because it challenges us in so many ways.
The game is first and foremost a spelling and vocabulary challenge but experienced players also use shrewd math skills to try to get the highest score. Tile placement for maximum totals takes thought and patience. The ability to place one or two letters in just the right spot can also connect words or make several new ones to run up the score.
There are also many ways to customize game play to make it more interesting. The game manufacturers have picked up on that idea and added some new twists of their own. These include the use of these Power Tiles.
As you can see, there are three of each color. One blank and two with stars. The blank tile can be used the way one would ordinarily use a blank. The twist is that this one is worth three points! Use the stars to "hold" a place so that nobody else can use it except for you. Once the star is removed and the square is used the star tile is now out of play.
Set up the game just as you would for classic play. Each player gets seven tiles - and then their three power tiles. Use the wooden tile holder to hide your tiles from the opponent's view.
Proceed to play as you normally would setting up a crossword grid - but add in the power tiles to gain an advantage. Here each player has used a blank power tile and the blue player has blocked a spot.
This block allowed her to use the space on her next turn and get a long word with a couple of multipliers.
There are also instructions for team play included - and of course, you can always make up your own games. We have played with nouns, verbs, or adjectives only. We have also allowed Latin or Spanish words, too.
If you love Scrabble as much as I do you may want to consider setting up School Scrabble Club. It is great for kids and if your team is skilled they could enter the National School Scrabble Championship.
Teams from schools in the USA and Canada (grades 4-8) join in an 8 round multi-day event that includes the game competition and other and fun events. The winners get a trophy and $10,000! Learn more - National School Scrabble Championship.
I am also hosting a giveaway for a copy of the game. One lucky winner will win their own Scrabble Crossword Game with Power Tiles courtesy of Hasbro. Use the form below to enter and please complete the actions for each step.
