I have owned quite a few homes and rented several, too. The houses I have owned (including where I live now) have always been total renovations. I have lived in many cities in many states. The fact that I have been in my current residence for more than a decade is pretty amazing!
Because of all I have been through I know a lot about the excitement of buying, the mixed emotions of selling, the fun (and stress!) of renovation, and everything that goes with relocating. I've even had to stay in my parents' home for short periods during construction or waiting for closings. That is always a little bit weird. . . being a grown adult person but also being the child. While it was a huge help, it is not something I want to do again any time soon!
Anyone who has ever owned a home knows how much goes in to the upkeep and there are always stories - some are even funny in hindsight. We have friends who laugh about the time the plumbing backed up in the middle of a party, another tells of the tree that came down two days before their daughter planned to get married in the back yard! We had neighbors who found a raccoon family had moved in under their back porch, and others with bats in the attic.
Of course, the most important stories of all are the ones that happen with people. The holidays, the family dinners, the games, the laughs, the fights, and the love. What really makes a home is the life that happens under the roof.
Chicken Soup for the Soul: Home Sweet Home shares stores about all of this, and more. There are ten chapters,
- On the Move
- Buying and Selling
- Dreams Can Come True
- Remodeling, Redecorating, Repairing
- Through the Generations
- You CAN go Home Again
- Unwanted Guests
- Do-It Yourself Disasters
- Downsizing and Retiring
- What Makes a Home
With the usual mix of laughter, sentiment, and smiles this book makes a great housewarming gift or something fun for a newlywed couple. The stories are only a few pages long so they make for a good and quick pick me up.
