I had not heard of Rich Mullins before I watched this movie, but his story is interesting. He was a talented but tormented man. Although he had a successful Christian music career in the late 1980's and early 90's he was not comfortable with the lifestyle. another struggle he faced was the confusion that came from feeling a strong Christian conviction at the same time he was struggling with depression and darkness. According to the movie, he also had a difficult relationship with his father which bothered him all of his life.
I think a lot of people deal with the problems that Rich Mullins faced but we don't live in the spotlight so it can play out a bit differently. It seems that Rich made the classic mistake of believing that if a person were a "good" Christian it meant every day would be sunshine and lollipops and that sin would go away.
Unfortunately, as humans, we will always be flawed and broken - but that is precisely what the Gospel tells us! Jesus came and endured the Passion because of our brokenness which he took upon himself. Of course, this is not a free pass to skip down a path of debauchery - but it is why we can lay our weary souls at the foot of the cross where he will take up our pain as his own.
Rich Mullins does come to this realization with the help of a man named Brennan Manning who preaches what he calls "the Ragamuffin Gospel". This does not quite line up with what I believe, but it is a popular ministry which has helped many people.
Here is a trailer for the DVD:
Learn about Rich Mullins' humble beginnings on a farm, his early days of singing in small venues, the way he is discovered by Nashville producers and how is hired to write for and open shows for Amy Grant. The story goes on to show how he begins his own recording career and becomes a headline act. It also tells how none of this fills the lonely place inside of him - but it was interesting to see how he made sure to keep his lifestyle humble and how he preferred places like Wichita or a Navajo Reservation to Nashville. there are also Special Features which include deleted scenes, some information about the making of the film, audio commentary, and a special message from Dave Mullins, Rich's brother.
The DVD has just been released and the soundtrack will be in stores on July 22nd. Fans of Christian music will want to own this one which features Jars Of Clay, Derek Webb, Sidewalk Prophets, Audrey Assad, Leigh Nash and more! As a bonus, the CD will include two NEW, original, never-before heard songs from Rich Mullins that were recorded in the early 1970's.
