Have you ever noticed how well preschool children learn when we add a song and a dance to our lesson?  Active engagement has been shown to help us to retain knowledge.  Think about it - we all know the alphabet song, and I learned the fifty states in alphabetical order with a song I still remember today!

Even if we didn't have countless children's programs to show us how well kids respond to lessons with a physical component, we all know at least a few of these song and dance lessons that have been handed down from generation to generation.  Now that our children are fascinated by handheld devices, they are getting much less of this exercise based learning.

This is where TheO Smartball comes to the rescue!  It combines coveted app gaming screen time with exercise.  The apps designed to go with TheO are educational and require movement to work.

The company has produced a video which explains it quite well and shows how kids can use the ball.

There are a lot of apps to choose from and the developers are working on even more.  There are also different age ranges so it is not strictly a pre-k toy.

To find the apps I went to the iTunes store and typed in "theo smartball" and got a long list of apps to chose from.  Most are free, some are paid apps.

Once the apps are loaded onto a phone or iPod, it is tucked securely into the ball which protects the screen and also protects the device from any the shock of bouncing and moving.

You can choose to simply place your phone into the spot, which is a snug and secure fit, or you can use the sleeve which holds onto all four corners of the device and then velcroes onto the spot inside the ball.

Here is a short video demonstration I made so you can see how it works.

Now that you have an idea of what it is like, you probably know a family or a teacher that could pur one of these to great use.  It might even be yourself!  The link to the website is included in the bullet points section of this post, or if you prefer, Amazon offers TheO Smartball as a Prime item.

I also have some great news.  The wonderful people at PhysicalApps have allowed me to host a giveaway for one Smartball.  If you care to try your luck, please use the form provided to submit your entries.  be sure to complete any tasks required.  I had to disqualify a winner earlier today who did not activate an email subscription.  I never like having to do that!
