“No one has ever become poor by giving.” ~ Anne Frank, The Diary of Anne Frank
Sometimes when we are balancing the budget, especially during lean times, it can be hard to set aside money for charity. I have lived long enough to have experienced both good and bad times economically. If I have learned anything, it is that when my hand is closed too tightly on what I have, I cannot open it to receive. It is not an easy way to live, either. It can be stressful and tiresome. Thankfully as I matured both in age and in spirit I have seen our needs met time and time again. This has helped me to become a better steward of our bank account, that's for sure. Additionally, I have become more giving and have less desire for material things for myself.
If you are looking for a way to accomplish this for yourself, Mrs. Sharon White has put together an easy to use plan that can help a homemaker to increase her household giving. This change clearly blesses others, but it blesses our own families as well.
The book is not just an instructional manual - Each week is also a short Bible study. There is a brief introduction to start the book and then the challenges begin. The chapters start with an inspirational quote and then two to three pages of author discussion on the weekly topic. These pages just shine with Mrs. White's sweet personality. I can almost imagine that I am sitting in the parlor of her lovely Vermont home having a chat. There are discussion questions for each chapter which help the reader to formulate thoughts and plans and there is plenty of space to write notes. Finally the challenge for the week is presented. This format makes it easy to use as an individual or with a group. These are completely doable and practical suggestions, don't be intimidated!
There are several pages at the end of the book dedicated for twelve weeks of financial journaling and then a page to document exactly how much has been saved and how much has been given to charity over the course of the program. There is also a bibliography of the quotes used in the book, and some information about the author - including her other book titles. She has written quite a few books now, one in particular that goes well with this title is Living on His Income: Remembrances and Advice for The Christian Housewife which is also available from the Amazon website.
You can read more from Mrs. White by visiting her website, The Legacy of Home where she discusses her experiences as a Christian homemaker, homeschooling mother, grandmother, and wife. She has been a friend for several years, and I am so glad she shared a copy of this lovely book with me so that I could tell you all about it!
