I still don't full understand the contemporary science vs religion debate, but it does exist. I have always thought, Why not both? This DVD, Patterns of Evidence: Exodus is proof that religion and science can coexist.
First the film sets forth the case against Exodus that is the prominent consensus among academia. After putting the claims out there, filmmaker Timothy Mahoney posits,
"Is the Bible just a myth, or did the archaeologists get it wrong?"From there he collaborates with archaeologists and religious scholars to find the "Patterns of Evidence" that support the story of Exodus. The movie is narrated by Kevin Sorbo and features archaeologists Israel Finkelstein, Kent Weeks, and David Rohl. There are also guest appearances by Israel’s Benjamin Netanyahu and Shimon Peres.
The facts presented are interesting and could be useful for the Doubting Thomases who need to see in order to believe. It could also be helpful for the person who is always debating Apologetics within their social circle. I think it would make a good movie night choice for these folks and it would spark some interesting discussion. The movie presents both sides of the argument, so I think it would be palatable, even intriguing, to skeptics.
Here is a trailer which gives you an idea of how the movie rolls out.
I'm not a cinematography expert but my personal opinion is that it is well produced with a very nice soundtrack and excellent photography. Unfortunately, the "main characters" are not actors but science guys - so they tend to speak quietly and without a lot of animation. It can get a bit dull for a layperson. On the other hand, I think that for science minded people, it could be fascinating. For example, they spend a lot of time on the dating and time sequence. While this is useful in a science debate, I am a person who already believes the story. Therefore I was much more interested in seeing things like The Joseph Statue and Tomb, The Walls of Jericho and the Burnt Grain of Jericho, The Ipuwer Papyrus, and other archaeological wonders.
For my personal use, I watched it in pieces, and will probably show it to my sons in the same way when we study The Old Testament this year for school.
The disc has some special features, too. These include:
- Cast Profiles & 17 Extra Interviews
- Behind the Music
- From Film to Book
- Additional Books and Resources
- Host a Patterns of Evidence Movie Event
