Decadent Baked French Toast Recipe - Great for a Brunch

baked french toast casserole
This is a great recipe for a Baked French Toast Casserole.  It is absolutely delicious, and while it takes some time, it is very straightforward and easy to prepare.

To begin, take out a 9x13 baking dish and generously butter the bottom and sides.

Then, assemble the ingredients.

Ingredients
You will need:
  • 1 loaf of sliced Italian bread from the deli.  (crusty and dense)
  • 2 cups of refrigerated coffee creamer.  (I used Bailey's Butter Pecan)
  • 1 cup of whole milk
  • 8 large eggs
  • 2 tablespoons granulated white or brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
Begin by breaking the bread into pieces and setting it aside.

Then, combine the creamer, milk, eggs, sugar, vanilla cinnamon, and nutmeg in a large bowl.  Make sure it is well blended, but do not beat it.  You will want to keep the thick, creamy consistency.

Combine
Now arrange the pieces of bread in the baking dish allowing the edges to overlap.

Pour milk/egg mixture over the bread slices, covering them completely.

Add another layer of bread, and cover it completely as well.  (the photo shows two baking pans because I was making this to take to a function and doubled the recipe)

Bread Absorbs Ingredients
Cover the dish and allow the mixture to absorb into the bread for at least four hours - but it can sit overnight, too.  Refrigerate while soaking.

When you are ready to complete the baking, take the dish from the fridge and allow to sit while you preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

While the oven warms, it is time to prepare a topping, and allow some of the chill to come off of the casserole.

To make the topping, you will need:
  • 2 sticks of butter
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons of corn syrup
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 cup of chopped nuts (optional)
Combine all  of the ingredients in a medium sized bowl and blend well with an electric mixer.

Topping
Spread the topping evenly over the top of the bread

Ready For Oven
Place into the heated oven, uncovered, and allow it to bake for about 40 minutes, until the top is golden brown.
Complete

Serve warm with or without syrup.

Bon Apetit!
